UBC Thunderbirds men's golfer Evan Holmes finished atop the leaderboard at the 2016 Association of Independent Institutions conference championship, in Chesterton, Ind., which concluded Tuesday.

The junior from Calgary completed the three-round event with a score of 6-under-par 210 (70-69-71) and tied for top spot with teammate Nate Ollis. Holmes led UBC to the team title as well. His outstanding performance over the two-day A.I.I. tournament was highlighted by an ace in the opening round. Holmes sank his tee shot on the 15th hole by using a 7-iron from 160 yards out.

Holmes and the rest of the UBC squad will compete at the 65th annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championships May 24-27 at TPC Deer Run in Silvis, Ill.
