Rookie Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson had a spectacular debut in her first CIS swimming championship, winning four gold medals and one silver en route to being named both the Rookie of the Year and the Female Swimmer of the Year.

The Ottawa native’s performance also helped her UBC Thunderbirds to the CIS national title, which they won by the largest margin in the history of the meet. UBC finished with 802.5 points compared to the 405 earned by second-place finishers, Montreal.

On day one, Seltenreich-Hodgson broke the CIS record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley, winning gold in a time of four minutes and 34.76 seconds.

She added two more gold medals on the second day of competition. Seltenreich-Hodgson was the first to finish the 200m butterfly, in 2:11.61. She then teamed up with Savannah King, Brittney Harley and Heather MacLean to pace UBC to gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay.

The first-year Arts student then capped off the meet with a gold in the 200m IM (2:09.48) and a silver medal in the 200m backstroke (2:08.05).
