The UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Volleyball Team

The UBC women's volleyball team is the most successful varsity volleyball program in the country. No one has made more championship appearances or won more championship medals, with UBC winning 9 golds in the last 16 seasons. To be the best we want to recruit the best, and are always looking both within Canada and around the world for the best players we can find who want to play and train in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia.

Our recruiting occurs year round with athletes first filling in the department recruiting information and then later our more specific team needs. We then scout and communicate with athletes. We shortlist them, bring them in for visits and make offers. Our needs fluctuate year to year positionally, and players should take the first step of communicating with us and letting us know your interest.

Typically we watch and identify athletes in both grade 10 and 11 to begin the process and are continually revising our lists. Players usually accept offers in grade 11 and 12. We look at both the physical attributes needed to play the game at the highest levels, but equally are concerned with academic strengths, and the ability to handle the course load at UBC. Of critical importance is the attitude and mental toughness the player demonstrates both to be able to be a great Thunderbird teammate and competitor, but also to manage a highly competitive environment, school stresses, distance from family and the work and travel required to compete in our league.
