UBC consistently ranks among the top 40 universities in the world. With over 20 faculties that are made up of dozens and dozens undergraduate and masters programs, 59,000 students call the UBC Vancouver campus home, including 16,000 international students from well over 100 countries.

In addition to its standing as one of the top research-intensive universities in the world, UBC also prides itself on maintaining a vibrant learning environment which features numerous experiential learning opportunities and a 23-1 student-teacher ratio.

Surrounded by the forested trails of Pacific Spirit Regional Park and sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean, UBC’s Vancouver campus finds itself nestled in the city’s Point Grey neighbourhood. With world-class recreational facilities, natural amenities, and friendly year-round temperatures, UBC students have access to countless options when it comes to living an active lifestyle on the west coast.

The United Nations have ranked Vancouver as one of the top cities in the world in which to live for the past decade, with the city being renowned for pristine natural surroundings of mountain and sea, warm winter climate, and culturally diverse communities. The Point Grey campus is located just an hour from the United States border, 20 minutes from the city’s downtown entertainment district, and 30 minutes from the mountains.

The Thunderbird Experience

CANADA’S MOST DECORATED ATHLETICS PROGRAM

The UBC Thunderbirds varsity program consists of 26 teams in 14 sports, with affiliations in two inter-university leagues.

Historically, UBC boasts the most successful program in U SPORTS, as Thunderbird teams have won over 125 national championships to date, adding more than 20 banners in the U.S.-based National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

UBC has also produced countless international competitors and medalists, including over 240 Olympians, and hundreds of student-athletes who have been drafted into professional leagues around the world.
 

ACADEMIC AND FINANCIAL SUPPORTS

The UBC Athletics and Recreation department employ full-time staff to aid student-athletes in their academic pursuits. A particular emphasis is placed on the transition of first-year students, for whom one-on-one tutoring, as well as guaranteed residence housing, is offered.

Additionally, priority course registration is also available for student-athletes in most faculties, while financial support is provided in the form of athletic scholarships and alumni-supported awards for leadership and academic performance, as well as a work-study program. INTEGRATED SPORT SCIENCE

To optimize individual and team performance, student-athletes are also will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, technology, hydrotherapy recovery rooms, massage therapy, and be supported by experts in exercise physiology, dietetics and sport psychology.

In addition, UBC’s strength and conditioning coaches tailor individual and sport-specific training regimens for student athletes in the 4,000-square-foot Smith and Laycoe Varsity Training Centre.

Overall athlete health has been made a priority, with three full-time therapists and strong partnerships with UBC Student Health and Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre all dedicated to keeping our athletes in top form, mentally and physically.
