Recruitment - Women's Field Hockey

Recruitment information

UBC Women’s Field Hockey is one of the strongest field hockey programs in the country with 19 U SPORTS national titles and 31 Canada West/WCIAA titles. We also honoured six Academic All-Canadians in 2024. This means we work just has hard in the classroom as we do on the field. We have pride in our athletes, our culture and our success and we thrive in challenging environments.

UBC is one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, as Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. UBC is home to a state-of-the-art water-based pitch, along with a mini water-based pitch for smaller groups. UBC women’s field hockey is supported by a staff with experience ranging from national, provincial, collegiate and regional levels, and our athletes work with experienced strength and conditioning coaches in our UBC Varsity Gym.

Our season runs from August-April, and can carry over into the summer as many of our athletes stick around to train over those months. Pre-season camps are held in Vancouver, but there are sometimes trips elsewhere as well.

If you are interested in joining our program and think you are Thunderbird material, please complete the following steps and contact us. We want to hear from you!
  • Fill out the prospective athlete form
  • Add a short video displaying technical, game footage and specialty skills (add link to video in prospective athlete form)
  • Send an email to fieldhockeyw.recruiting@ubc.ca with a player resume, 2 player references and a brief introduction.

History of UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Field Hockey

  • Thunderbird field hockey is older than the University of British Columbia?  It’s true – the Thunderbird field hockey story began when women started playing grass hockey in Vancouver around 1896, 19 years before the University of British Columbia opened in 1915.
  • Historically, the Women’s Field Hockey team has been one of UBC’s most consistent national title-contenders.
  • Since 1974, UBC Women’s Field Hockey has registered 19 national titles, the most of any program in the country and third-most of any team at UBC, behind only Women's and Men's Swimming.
  • Our girls are academically strong -- they work hard on the field as a team and in the classroom as students.
  • All our girls give back – UBC WFH team members all volunteer & give back to the community.
