VICTORIA – The UBC Thunderbirds men's and women's rowing teams showed well on day one, time trials at the Canadian University Rowing Championships at Elk Lake in Victoria.
UBC qualified for all six finals on both the men's and women's sides during Saturday's time trials, creating a strong opportunity for both programs. However, to secure a championship win, they will need an outstanding Sunday filled with consistent top-ranking races. Brock, UVic, and Western also had impressive performances, each qualifying the same number of crews, setting the stage for an exciting contest for this year's title.
The UBC men's team is aiming for their third consecutive championship and they've claimed seven of the last nine CURC titles. The T-Birds women's squad have won three of the last five trophy's handed out but have been edged by UVic the last two-straight years including by just eight points last season to take top spot.
The championship is determined by points accumulated across six races, with the most points awarded for the 8+ events. UBC finished first in both the men's and women's 8+ races on Saturday, and maintaining this position will be crucial for success on Sunday.
Championship Sunday gets underway early at 9:00 a.m. PT. and will be live streamed on the UVic Vikes youtube channel:
