LONDON, Eng. – Two current T-Birds and three standout alumni will be on the River Thames racing at the world's most famous regatta this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Liam Smit and
Maijken Meindertsma will race as part of the UBC / University of Western Ontario Visitors 4-, joining forces with Aidan Hembruff and Sam Stewart from UWO. Back on June 12th, the jetlagged crew finished a very strong fifth-place at the Marlow Regatta on Dorney Lake, just three seconds out of first in the championship event.
The foursome has since regained their legs and are seeded through to the second round at the Henley Royal Regatta. They will face off against Elizabethan Boat Club and Cambridge '99 Rowing Club in the Visitors' Challenge Cup on Friday, July 4th, at 5:50 p.m. British Summer Time (9:50 a.m. PST). Should the crew advance, they may have a rematch against the Marlow-winning Oxford "A" on Saturday.
A pair of Thunderbird alumni will race in another 4-, competing for the prestigious Stewards' Challenge Cup.
Joel Cullen and Axel Ewasko join crewmates Steven Rosts and Ryan Clegg rowing as Rowing Canada Shawnigan Lake. They are seeded directly through to Sunday's final and will likely face Croatian Rowing, which features the Olympic multi-medalist Sinkovic brothers.
Fellow alumnus
Julian Black is bowing London Rowing Club "A" 8+, competing for the Thames Challenge Cup. Black is currently completing a PhD at Imperial College London. He and his crew have had an excellent start to the regatta, setting course records for their event in both their Tuesday and Wednesday heats.
