Sunday was a notable day for the UBC Women's Rowing program, as a pair of Thunderbirds represented Canada in separate international tournaments.
In Poznan, Poland,
Gabriella Worobec stroked the Team Canada Women's Eight to a bronze medal at the World Rowing U23 Championships. The race was tight from the beginning, with Canada, the United States and Germany all neck and neck behind Great Britain at the 500m mark.
While the Americans managed to create some separation as the race went on to grab silver, Worobec and her team earned bronze as they finished just under one and a half seconds ahead of the German boat.
This was not Worobec's first time earning an international medal, as this triumph comes a year after she earned bronze in the Women's Eight at the 2024 FISU World University Rowing Championships. The Edmonton native recently completed her fourth year at UBC.
Meanwhile, this year's FISU Championships featured another T-Bird,
Madelyn Vandermeer, competing in the Women's Four. The Canadian team finished fifth in the event's final, held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
Coming off just her first year with the program, Vandermeer will aim to use the experience gained at the tournament to bolster her sophomore season.
These international exploits come just a few weeks after T-Bird Men's Rowing athletes
Liam Smit and
Maijken Meindertsma raced as part of the UBC / University of Western Ontario Visitors 4- at the world-famous
Henley Royal Regatta in London, England.
