Huskies double up T-Birds in Saskatoon

SASKATOON, Sask. – Strong possessions on the power play from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team helped lift the team to a 4-2 victory over the visiting University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Merlis Belsher Place Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, both sides regrouped and lit the lamp in the second frame. The T-Birds (6-3) struck first with a goal from Sophia Gaskell early in the period. Isabella Pozzi then nabbed her first goal of the season off of a shot from the point.

Kennedy Brown then scored on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Huskies (6-1-2) a 2-1 lead. UBC's Mackenzie Kordic responded shortly after to tie it up, but less than two minutes later Jordyn Holmes tucked one past T-Birds goalie Elise Hugens.

In the third period, Abby Shirley notched her fourth goal in three games on the power play to solidify the Huskies win, handing the T-Birds their second road loss of the season.

The 'Birds will gun for the weekend split when the two teams meet for the final time this regular season Saturday afternoon. Puck drop at Merlis Belsher Place is 5:00 p.m. PT.
