Supporting Champions In and Out of the Classroom
Thunderbird student athletes have long been a source of pride for the University of British Columbia, combining unmatched academic and athletic excellence to produce the future leaders of tomorrow. Success in the classroom and in competition requires the support of the entire UBC community. With your help, we will continue to reach our goals and positively impact the lives of student-athletes year after year at the university. The UBC Old Birds
The Old Birds is a group of “old-timer” recreational hockey players consisting of retired UBC faculty, staff, alumni and friends. They have been playing friendly games among themselves at UBC on Monday afternoons for more than 30 years followed by a “fourth” period social and discussion hour. Their interest in the UBC Women’s Hockey Team began in the 1990’s when two of their members had daughters on the team.
In 2008, they established an
Old Birds Women’s Hockey Endowment which has funded nine awards totaling close to $14,000, with recent awards having risen to approximately $4,000 per year.
They also support the women’s team in other ways including:
- Purchase of tables for the annual ZLC Millennium Scholarship Breakfast
- Direct financial donations to the team to help with travel, equipment and various special projects
- A Meet and Greet luncheon event early in the season
- Twice-a-year scrimmage and dinner events
- Attendance at home games throughout their season
In addition, several members of the Old Birds provide individual financial or other types of support for the women’s team or individual members of it.
