SASKATOON, Sask. – The UBC Thunderbirds scored twice in the first period while Elise Hugens made 24 saves for her league leading fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies at Merlis Belsher Place Saturday night.
Third-year Thunderbird forward Ashley McFadden opened scoring on the power play 9:28 into the opening frame when captain Kenzie Robinson found her line mate in the slot. McFadden buried her third of the season for what turned out to be the eventual game winner.
Hannah Koroll doubled the T-Birds (7-3) lead with her second of the year in the final minute of the first, sniping from the point past Huskies (6-2-2) goaltender Camryn Drever.
Drever finished the game with 31 saves in a strong effort but didn't get any run support while Saskatchewan finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play. UBC scored once on four opportunities.
Now just two points behind both Mount Royal and Manitoba for top spot in the conference, the T-Birds are home to MRU next Friday and Saturday for the final weekend series of 2021.
