Cougars edge T-Birds in shootout

REGINA – The Regina Cougars (1-4-1-0) stormed back from a two-goal second period deficit to defeat the UBC Thunderbirds (2-3-0-1) 3-2 in a shootout Saturday afternoon at the Co-operators Centre.

Jaycee Magwood and Jenna Mirk both scored in the shootout while Regina goaltender Jane Kish was excellent in her first action of the season, making 29 saves for the win.

Both teams' special teams units were put to the test throughout the contest as UBC had 22 minutes in penalties while Regina had 20.

UBC opened up the scoring three-and-a-half minutes into the second period. Hannah Clayton-Carroll split the Cougars' defence and deked past Kish, put it on her backhand and buried it into the back of the net. Clayton-Carroll scored her second goal of the night minutes later on the power play, receiving a pass from Mathea Fischer before firing it by a sliding Kish's glove.

Elise Endicott got the Cougars on the scoreboard with a shorthanded, unassisted goal midway through the second period. Endicott battled a Thunderbird defender in the Cougars zone and came away with the puck. The fourth-year forward rushed up the left wing boards into the UBC zone and fired a quick wrist shot from the left face-off dot across Tory Micklash's body to beat her glove side.

Jordan Kulbida scored a power play goal early in the third, off an assist from Lilla Carpenter-Boesch that Kulbida snapped into the back of the net for her first of the season.

Both teams could not solve the opposing goaltender throughout the rest of the third period nor two overtime frames, forcing a shootout.

Tory Micklash vs Alberta, Oct. 27, 2018

Fischer was the first shooter and beat Kish with a backhand shot glove side. Carpenter-Boesch shot for Regina and Chanreet Bassi second for UBC; both were unable to capitalize. Magwood was the home team's second shooter and scored with a quick wrist shot on Micklish to even it up before Tiffany Chiu was stopped by Kish.

Merk shot third for the Cougars and had the opportunity to close out the game. She came down the ice slowly, deked out Micklash and put the puck on her backhand before lifting it into the back of the net to cement the Cougars' victory.

Having picked up a point in a fourth straight game, the T-Birds will look to get back in the win column when they return home to host the Manitoba Bisons next Friday and Saturday.
