VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team wrapped up their pre-season with a 2-0 win against Team B.C. on Saturday afternoon at Father Bauer Arena. The weekend sweep of the provincial team gives the 'Birds a perfect 7-0 exhibition record before commencing their CIS season on October 7th.Â
Rookie Thunderbird goalies
Tory Micklash and
Amelia Boughn shared duties on Saturday's game, though neither were overwhelmed by a combined 13 saves. At the other end of the rink, B.C. goaltender Kendra Woodland had an impressive 34-save performance.Â
UBC head coach
Graham Thomas felt that his team's performance this weekend was an ideal way to finish off their exhibition games.Â
"We had a good pre-season this year, and it was great to have Team B.C. here. We are ready to go for our home opener," said Thomas. Â
Thomas appreciated how the T-birds were able to build on Friday night's game against B.C., where they walked away with a narrow 3-2 win.Â
"We played a much better game today. We learned some lessons yesterday, and as a result we played consistently all the way through."
The T-Birds opened scoring in the first frame when a cross-ice pass from
Celine Tardif found
Kelly Murray, who blasted in her shot from the point. UBC maintained momentum for the remainder of the period, outshooting B.C. 10-4.
UBC struck early again in the second, this time with
Hannah Clayton-Carroll sneaking one past Woodland just 30 seconds into the period. Team B.C.'s Jessie Sanghe helped set up a pair of close chances in the second, but neither found twine.
The Thunderbirds were held off the scoreboard in the third period, thanks to a more aggressive B.C. defence and Woodland's consistently strong goaltending.Â
