VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team split their weekend series in Regina by defeating the Cougars 3-1 Saturday evening.
Â
With the win, the Thunderbirds remain third in the Canada West standings and their record is now 5-1-3-1 (wins, overtime wins, losses and OT losses). With the loss, the Cougars fall to sixth place with a 3-2-4-1 record.
Â
The 'Birds readjusted after their heartbreaker loss in double OT yesterday and gave Regina everything they had. Rookie
Mikayla Ogrodniczuk (Vancouver) opened up scoring less than five minutes into the second, the team fired a whopping 31 shots toward Regina's net, and fifth-year goaltender
Danielle Dube (New Westminster, B.C.) made 19 saves to help UBC secure the win.
Â
Regina scored first only eight minutes after puck drop. The goal belonged to Brooklyn Moskowy, who scored yesterday against the 'Birds as well. The goal was her third of the season.
Â
Four minutes into the second, Ogrodniczuk accepted a pass from fellow rookie
Shiayli Toni (Saskatoon, Sask.) and slipped the puck past Cougars goaltender Toni Ross for UBC's first tally of the night. The goal would be the rookie's second of the season. They would whip 12 shots on goal this period and their defence would limit the number of shots Dube saw from Regina to a mere six.
Â
UBC netted two goals in the third to secure their win. Fifth-year forward
Rebecca Unrau (Humboldt, Sask.) found fourth-year
Jenna Carpenter-Boesch (Gray, Sask.) 6:43 in for the game winner and her first tally of the season, and third-year
Kathleen Cahoon (Calgary) would pot an empty netter with 10 seconds left in the game. Cahoon, who has been hot lately, has six points in the last six games.
Â
The second and third period saw copious penalties from both sides as the game got heated. Unfortunately, neither team took advantage. In total, UBC went 0-for-6 and Regina went 0-for-3.
Â
The Thunderbirds have next weekend off, but then host the Saskatchewan Huskies for a two-game weekend series Nov. 13-14 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Centre. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. (PT) on both Friday and Saturday.Â
