VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team will look to break a four-game losing streak this weekend, as it hosts the No. 9 University of Alberta Pandas for a two-game set at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
UBC Thunderbirds
2011 conference record: 1-4-1 (7th)
2011 CIS ranking: -
Last week: lost to Calgary 8-1, 5-1
Streak: 3 losses
The Thunderbirds' losing streak began at home on Oct. 28 when they dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Regina Cougars. UBC lost to Regina again the next night before falling twice more last weekend on the road at Calgary.
The Thunderbirds are six points out of a playoff spot. They face the team, Alberta, that currently holds that last post-season spot.
UBC has given up the most goals, 24, in the Canada West conference so far this season. The team has scored just nine so far in six games. Â
Tatiana Rafter leads UBC in scoring with a goal and four assists in six games in 2011-12.
Laura Jordan has two goals and two assists. Rafter and Jordan are the only UBC players in the Canada West top 20 in scoring.
Nikola Brown-John, a defender, leads the team in shots with 22 so far this season.
No. 7 Alberta Pandas
2011 conference record: 2-1-5 (4th)
2011 CIS ranking: 7
Last week: lost to Lethbridge 4-3 (SO), 2-1 (OT)
Streak: 4 OT/SO losses
The Alberta Pandas sit in fourth place in the Canada West standings, looking up at the Lethbridge Pronghorns, the league leaders.
Last weekend, the Pandas faced the Pronghorns and ended up on the wrong side of a couple of historic results.
On Friday, Lethbridge beat Alberta 4-3 in a shootout. It was the Pronghorns' first-ever Canada West victory over Alberta. Prior to the game, Alberta was 52-0-3 against their southern Alberta rivals.
Then on Saturday, the Pronghorns were able to repeat the result, winning 2-1 in overtime. It was just the second time Alberta had been swept at home in a weekend series.
Alberta has now dropped four games in a row in extra time, either in overtime or in a shootout. The Pandas will look to get back into the win column against UBC this weekend.
