UBC's Savannah King won her third straight Canada West Female Swimmer of the Year award on the weekend after leading her Thunderbirds to a record-breaking performance at the conference meet in Calgary at the U of C Aquatic Centre. For efforts she was named the Canada West First Star of the Week.
The fourth-year student from Vernon, B.C. won four individual gold medals and one relay gold.
The UBC team set new Canada West marks for most points (1071) and the largest margin of victory, 497 points over Calgary, on the weekend.
King won the 800-metre freestyle in a time of eight minutes, 36.65 seconds on the first day of competition. She then won her second gold of the night in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
On day two, King claimed first-place finishes in the 200m backstroke and the 200m freestyle.
To cap off the championship, the two-time Olympian earned her fourth individual gold of the meet, winning the 400m freestyle handily in a time of 4:08.39.
King and the rest of the UBC Thunderbirds team will shoot for their third consecutive national title when the CIS championships take place Feb. 20-22 at the University of Toronto.
