T-Birds’ quest to reclaim Canada West banner begins Friday

Friday, October 30 marks the beginning of the 2026 Canada West playoffs, and with it, the opportunity for the Thunderbirds to reassert themselves as the top dogs in the conference.

It certainly won't be an easy path, with the 'Birds first facing off against a young and hungry Lethbridge side, and a potential matchup against either longtime rivals Victoria or recent rivals Mount Royal waiting should they make it to the semifinal round.

The blue and gold will also be hoping to avoid any sort of rust, as they were the team that had their bye week for this season come in the final weekend of conference play.

"We gave the guys Saturday and Sunday off, and then back to it on Monday," said UBC head coach Mike Mosher. "Given everything in perspective, it's quite a good weekend I think to have off. I mean, they've played enough games. I don't see us getting stale or anything like that, so we're looking forward to the weekend ahead."

The Thunderbirds play host to one half of the playoff bracket this weekend, with two quarterfinals happening on campus on Friday, followed by a semifinal on Sunday, November 1. With the Pacific Division owning the hosting rights for the Canada West Final this season, the top-seeded T-Birds know they are guaranteed home field advantage for as long as they remain alive in the conference playoffs.

The 'Birds are on a roll heading into the postseason, having won seven straight and conceding just three goals over that span. Max Comsia, Markus Rukavina and Luke Norman all finished the regular season ranked top five in the conference in goal contributions, showing the number of dangerous attackers Mosher has at his disposal.

Opposing the Thunderbirds in their playoff opener are the Lethbridge Pronghorns, who finished fourth in the Prairie Division with a 5-6-3 record. The Pronghorns have plenty of new faces compared to the team that UBC saw when the two sides last played in the 2025 regular season – 14 of their 29 players on roster are in their first year of eligibility, including seven of the starting lineup from their most recent outing, a come-from-behind road draw against Alberta.

"Their defensive record has been quite strong, so I think it'll be challenging," mused Mosher. "They'll make it difficult for us to create chances, so when we do get it then we'll have to take them."

In fact, four of the top six defences in the conference are in Vancouver this weekend, with the Vikes, Thunderbirds, Cougars and Pronghorns ranked first, second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in goals against per game.

"All good teams, all good teams, which is going to be the case this time of year, especially in our conference," added Mosher. "We've given ourselves the best possible advantages by being at home and not having to travel, so that's all you can do. But then you've got to show up and perform each game."

Should the T-Birds advance past the Pronghorns, it would be hard to come up with two more narratively-fitting potential opponents for the semifinal. The Cougars are the only team besides UBC to have lifted the conference championship since 2017 – the two sides faced each other in all of the last three Canada West Finals, with the home team winning on each occasion. The Vikes, meanwhile, will be eager to get one over on their coastal rivals, ahead of this year's U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship in Victoria.

Friday's quarterfinal kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) at South Turf field, with no tickets required to go enjoy the playoff action. You can also watch it unfold live on Canada West TV.
