Godbout strikes twice as T-Birds earn sixth straight win

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (11-0-2) stayed unbeaten on the season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the visiting Thompson Rivers Wolfpack (6-6-0) at Ken Woods Field on Friday evening.

A goal in each half from Henri Godbout gave UBC the win in their penultimate match of the Canada West regular season, in a contest they dominated from start to finish.

"I wouldn't put it as a game where they took a lot out of us," UBC head coach Mike Mosher said after the match. "We had a lot of the ball, didn't have to defend a lot beyond transition, versus some of the other games where it's been a bit of a track meet and a lot of transitions. That's why I didn't make a lot of subs till the end, as I didn't think it was taking a lot out of us.

"Credit to them, they defended well. At the end of the first half we had several chances, whole bunch of blocked shots and so forth, but in the end, clean sheet and decisive."

The Thunderbirds were forced into an early change when Theo Afework had to go off with a shoulder injury in the first minute. His replacement, Max Comsia, almost scored with his first touch, firing just wide seconds after coming on.

UBC dominated the first half play, but weren't getting the final quality ball to find a way through a resolute TRU defence.

That changed in the 38th minute when Yu-Hsuan Yuan found space in the middle and played in Godbout, who blasted home the opener for his fifth of the season.

Oliver Herbert and Luke Norman had looks on goal to start the second half for the Thunderbirds but were denied by Wolfpack goalkeeper Toran Rutherford.

Despite their dominance, UBC couldn't find the breakthrough, and that allowed TRU to start to come into the game in the last 10 minutes, led by the spark of their second-half subs.

Ryan Prasad drove wide in the 80th minute, before Sepehr Iravani sent a dangerous ball across goal moments later but with no Wolfpack takers.

UBC finally got their second in the last minute. With the TRU bench looking for a foul, the ball broke to Godbout at the edge of the box.

Having already clinched the number one seeding for the Canada West playoffs, UBC wrap up the 2026 regular season with a home game against UNBC Timberwolves at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday evening. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Thompson Rivers head to Langley to take on the Trinity Western Spartans the same evening.
