BOSTON, MA — The UBC Thunderbirds Rowing program delivered standout performances this past weekend at the world-renowned Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest head race in the world. Competing against some of the top university and international crews, UBC entered four boats in the Championship and Lightweight Men's and Women's Coxed Four events.
On the women's side, the Lightweight Women's 4+ placed third, crossing the line just four seconds behind the winners from Princeton University. The Championship Women's 4+ also posted an impressive result, placing 10th overall and seventh among collegiate crews, finishing within seven seconds of the top five.
The Championship Men's 4+ had one of the program's strongest showings in recent years, recording the third-fastest time overall, trailing only the University of Washington and Princeton. Meanwhile, the Lightweight Men's 4+ secured a sixth-place finish, just four seconds behind Queen's University, the top Canadian crew and right on the heels of Cambridge University. The result sets the stage for an exciting rematch at the upcoming Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURCs) scheduled for two week from now in Montreal.
"The Head of the Charles is a fantastic opportunity to see how our crews measure up against some of the best programs in the world," said UBC Men's Head Coach
Mike Pearce. "All four of our entries produced highly competitive performances against some of the most recognizable names in university rowing. These results give us great confidence that Thunderbird Rowing continues to push an upward trajectory."
"It was super exciting to start at the back of the pack and pass so many boats during our race," added Varsity coxswain Izzy Howley. "We stacked up well against the field and are excited to build on the momentum heading into the upcoming CURCs."
