There weren't too many fireworks in this heavyweight clash, as neither the UBC Thunderbirds nor the Victoria Vikes could find a goal in their battle this morning. The T-Birds did earn a bonus point from winning the shootout 3-2, an important result for potential tiebreaker purposes later in the season.
Veteran keeper
Hannah Rumble stood tall in the UBC goal, as the T-Birds recorded their third straight shutout of the season. UVic's Anais Chace did the same on the other end, as the two teams battled to a stalemate in regulation.
The T-Birds earned an early penalty corner just a few minutes in, but weren't able to find the breakthrough. The two teams traded half chances in the rest of the first half, but entered the break still knotted at 0-0. UVic had a couple of big chances in the third quarter, but Rumble and the rest of the UBC defense held strong. The game eventually went to a shootout as neither team could find a late winner.
The Thunderbirds scored on three of their four penalty shots, with
Kenzie Girgis,
Harriet Bradley and
Mikayla Stelling finding the back of the net. Rumble, meanwhile, stopped three shots including two in a row to end the shootout with a 3-2 UBC win.
The tie puts UBC and UVic level in the Canada West standings with a 2-0-1 record. The two teams face off against each other once again tomorrow morning in Victoria. If the rematch produces a winner, that team will be the frontrunner to take the Canada West crown and advance to the U SPORTS National Championship series. The all-important clash begins at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
