Thunderbirds battle hard but fall in shootout to Vikes

For the second straight day, the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes were unable to separate from each in regulation, ending the 60-minute game tied at 1-1. This time though, it was UVic who prevailed in the resulting shootout, taking the bonus point with them and leaving the weekend series honours even.

The first quarter was scoreless, making it five straight quarters with no goals for either team on the weekend. Things finally opened up in the second, and it was T-Birds rookie and reigning Canada West Player of the Week Sydney Le who broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. The North Vancouver native found the back of the net from open play, the first goal conceded by the Vikes this season.

That lead wasn't to last for long, however, as just seven minutes later UVic equalized from a penalty corner. That goal was also the first one conceded by UBC this season, as Geoff Matthews' group saw their shutout streak end at an impressive 206 minutes.

Neither team was able to add to their tally in the second half, which meant the two teams faced off in a shootout once again. The T-Birds went with the same lineup as the previous day, but although Kenzie Girgis and Le both converted their attempts, UVic goalie Anais Chace shut the door on the final two shooters to take it for the hosts.

The Thunderbirds now head home with a record of 2-0-2, deadlocked with the Vikes at the top of the Canada West standings. After four straight road games to open the year, the T-Birds now get to spend the rest of the regular season at home. With the race for the conference championship wide open in the final few weeks, the Thunderbirds have their destiny in their own hands as they try and win Canada West for the first time since 2017.

Next up for UBC is their home opener, part of a two-game series against Calgary on Saturday, September 28th, and Sunday, September 29th. Both games begin at 11:00 a.m. (PT) at Wright Field.
