Thunderbirds keep rolling with road win over Spartans

Kasundra Betinol scored her first goal as a T-Bird and Elise Hugens recorded her third shutout of the season, as the UBC Thunderbirds cruised to a 3-0 win in Langley.

The T-Birds built on their strong defensive play against the Spartans from earlier in the season, and have now conceded just one goal in their three games against Trinity Western. They outshot the Spartans 33-18 on the night, and 23-9 in the final two periods when they scored all three of their goals.

The first period was more even, with UBC holding just a 10-9 shot advantage and neither team finding the back of the net. It took until midway through the second before there was a breakthrough, and it came after a Spartans penalty.

With less than 20 seconds to go on the ensuing UBC power play, Annalise Wong entered the zone before dishing it back to Chanreet Bassi. Bassi then ripped a pass across the blueline to Jaylyn Morris, who had all the time in the world to walk into the slot and pick out the top corner with a wrist shot.

The middle frame ended with some fireworks, as TWU's Ashley Breitkreuz knocked Karine Sandilands to ice after the buzzer sounded. She was penalized for roughing on the play, a mistake that proved costly for the home team as the Thunderbirds made them pay with their power play coming out of the intermission.

Again it took until right near the end of the advantage, but a point shot from Mackenzie Kordic hit Betinol in front and bounced in. It was a deflating moment for the home team, who were unable to mount a comeback charge.

The Spartans tried to be aggressive by pulling their goalie with well over three minutes left, but were quickly undone by the T-Birds winning a defensive zone faceoff and driving the play forward the other way. Grace Elliott was the beneficiary as she slid her conference-leading 11th goal of the season into the empty net.

Now 14-2-1 on the season, UBC has a chance to extend their winning streak to four games when they take on the Spartans at home tomorrow afternoon. That game – the final action for the Thunderbirds before the winter break – begins at 3:00 p.m. (PT) at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
