KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds (3-0) cruised to an easy 88-48 victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack (0-3) on Friday night at the Tournament Capital Centre.
Even without Canada West All-Star
Mona Berlitz, the T-Birds never appeared threated by the 'Pack. The T-Birds jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter, ballooned their advantage to 27 points by midway through the second, and crept it up to 40 by the end of the one-sided game.
UBC's 88 points are the second most scored in a single game by any Canada West team so far this season, but it was their defence that may have been the most impressive. The 'Birds held the 'Pack to 12 or fewer points in all but one frame, mixing in a variety of highly effective half and full court pressures, as has become a signature of second-year head coach Isabel Ormond. The team's transition game after giving up points was also an obvious strength, as they seemed to answer every WolfPack bucket with a counterstrike so quick it would make Paul Westhead blush.
Individually, first-year phenom
Keira Daly continued to dazzle. She poured in a game-high 18 points on an incredibly efficient 5/6 from the field and 7/8 from the line. The Hamilton, Ontario-born guard has now scored at least 17 points in each of her first three U SPORTS regular season games, and her 18.7 PPG is third in the conference.
Canada West All-Star
Olivia Weekes was the other major offensive force for the T-Birds, posting a monster 17 point and 14 rebound double-double. She added a steal and a block for good measure. The power forward turned combo guard has also been uber-efficient this season, now shooting 56.7% from the field, tops in the conference among players with at least 20 field goal attempts.
The 'Birds did not allow any 'Pack player to score in double figures, holding their opponents to 34% from the field overall.
The two teams rematch back at the Tournament Capital Centre on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (PT). Stream Saturday's game, or watch Friday's at your convenience, on
