T-Birds men take third straight rowing national championship, women finish second

VICTORIA, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds men's rowing team won their third-straight Canadian University Rowing Championship while the women took home the national silver medal on Sunday at Elk Lake.

The T-Birds men had to dig deep to secure victory against a strong field at this year's championships. The gold medal is not only the third straight for the program, but also the seventh in the last eight years. The Thunderbirds enjoyed an impressive championship run, but faced tough battles from Brock, Western, Victoria, and Queens in close wire to wire races throughout the regatta.

UBC swept all three heavyweight events—the 8+, 2-, and 1x— while claiming a podium in five of the six event overall. The lightweight team delivered strong performances to stay competitive against Brock, Queens, and UVic. The Thunderbirds accumulated 113 points, Brock 107 and Western and UVic tied for 3rd overall with 86.

The UBC women's team remained in contention for the banner right up to the final race of the day and also swept all three heavyweight events. Victoria ultimately took the championship with 119 points thanks to consistent podium finishes across all events, capped by a win in the lightweight 4+.

UBC finished with 110 points while Queens took 3rd with 90. The T-Birds women also medaled in five of six events at the championship.

Individually, fourth-year Liam Smit was the 1x champion for the 'Birds and UBC's Mike Pearce was awarded Men's Team Coach of the Year.
