Calgary, Alta.
– A three-goal surge late in the second period fuelled the UBC Thunderbirds (11-2-0-0) to a 4-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos (5-4-1-1) on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
In a penalty-filled affair, the Thunderbirds scored a pair of second period power play goals that ultimately stood as the game-winner and insurance marker. In fact, all five goals in the game were notched in the second frame.
After some early pressure off the top of the game by UBC, it was Calgary that controlled the majority of play in the first period with four power play opportunities. Even while shorthanded through, the T-Birds managed to outshoot the Dinos 10-8 in the first frame.
UBC's
Annalise Wong opened the scoring less than three minutes into the second period, but the Dinos quickly responded on a shorthanded tally by Brooklyn Anderson.
The game remained tightly contested until a string of Calgary penalties mid-way through the middle stanza gave UBC the opportunity they were looking for.
First, Grace Elliot snapped a shot from the left faceoff circle past Dinos netminder Amelia Awad. Minutes later, a high shot from the blue line by
Jaylyn Morris extended the lead to two.
A tight-angle shot late in the second period by
Ashton Thorpe made it 4-1 for the Thunderbirds.
Awad remained busy in the Calgary crease during the third and made 12 of her 28 saves during the period.
Elise Hugens was solid in net for the Thunderbirds with 16 stops on 17 attempts.
The Dinos and Thunderbirds will return to the ice for a rematch at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m. (PT).
