Pandas hand ‘Birds OT loss in stunning fashion

EDMONTON – The host Alberta Pandas exacted some revenge on the UBC Thunderbirds in their rematch Saturday afternoon tying the game in the dying seconds of regulation before going on to win in overtime.

Friday night's season opener saw the T-Birds score the winner in the final minute, but Saturday at Clare Drake Arena it was Payton Laumbach who turned the tables, scoring the game tying marker off a scramble in the UBC crease with just one tenth of a second left in the third period.

The Pandas then needed just 54 seconds of overtime to secure their first win of the season with Brooklyn Tews potting the game winner.

Ella Stewner's initial initial shot from the point was stopped by T-Birds goaltender Elise Hugens in the final moments of regulation, but Laumbach was able to tie the game off the rebound. Tews capped off the dramatic Pandas win by tapping in a rebound off a two-on-one.

The loss still gives UBC a three point weekend but snaps what had been a seven game win streak over Alberta dating back to February of 2020.

Mackenzie Kordic gave the Thunderbirds their initial lead with her first of the season with seven minutes left in the third.

Elise Hugens made 21 saves for UBC, with Halle Oswald stopping 18 of the 19 UBC shots she faced to pick up her first win of the season.

The T-Birds head back to Vancouver to prepare for their home opener next Friday, October 6 against the Regina Cougars.
