VICTORIA - The 30
th running of the Brown Cup provided plenty of exciting racing for the thousands of spectators who lined the bridges, waterway pubs and followed the
Live Stream along the Gorge Waterway early Saturday afternoon in Victoria.. Both programs came to the boat race well-prepared and all four races added more history to this classic rivalry. UBC's Varsity men took away the Brown Cup trophy in what would be the T-Birds only win out of the event's four races.
In the Varsity Men's Brown Cup race, despite and minor collision with a Canada Goose, some evasive steering around a taxiing float plane, and rough water finish, UBC's Thunderbird Men won their 3rd consecutive Brown Cup rowing to a 3-length open water margin over UVic Vikes while also setting a new course record of 10:31.0 over the 3.7km course. UVic started aggressively but UBC maintained composure holding solid contact throughout the start sequence trusting that their solid base pace would carry them to the front. By three minutes into the race, UBC was able to build a length lead to set coxswain Isabelle Barlow-Jeffrey up for some clean turns through the bridges and a clear line to the finish for the win.
UBC's Varsity Women were very competitive against the Vikes but could not manage to get their bow ahead of this year's National Champion Vikes. The Vikes took a narrow lead early but at the halfway mark, only 4 seats separated the crews. UVic would not get more than 6 seats ahead of a gritty UBC crew and at the finish UVic crossed the line in exactly 12:00.0 to UBC's 12:02.0. The race was a solid step forward for the T-birds which bodes well for the future as the entire team will return next year save for 5th-year coxswain
Alex Birkenshaw.
The men's reserve race was an incredibly tight contest for the Campell/Dowd Cup as both crews locked into an almost identical pace throughout. UBC looked to be setting themselves up for a break ahead coming into the final Inner Harbour section of the course but the Vikes managed the rough water in the harbour with some cleaner bladework stealing UBC's momentum and the finish in the time of 10:45.0 with UBC just 1 second back in 10:46.0
UBC JV women stayed in solid contact with the Vikes throughout their race but the Vikes took an early length lead and were in good position to cover any moves from UBC. Both crews handled the rough water very well but the Vikes crossed the line first in 12:20 to UBC's 12:25, one length behind.
