SHAWNIGAN LAKE, BC – The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds rowing team continued their fall campaign with a dominant statement on Vancouver Island, securing a marquee victory in the Open Women's 8+ division at the Head of Shawnigan regatta.
Facing off against their coastal rivals from the University of Victoria, the Thunderbirds showcased their depth and chemistry over the grueling 6.5km head-race course.
The varsity UBC shell structured around the rhythm of stroke Willow Cherewaty, laid down a blistering pace from the start. Navigating the challenging fall waters with precision, the crew crossed the finish line with a time of 22:09.49 to claim first place. The performance was enough to hold off a fierce challenge from the University of Victoria's top boat which finished second in a time of 22:35.36.

The regatta further highlighted the incredible depth brewing within the T-Birds' program this season as UBC managed to power three boats into the top five of the Open Women's 8+ standings.
The Thunderbirds leave Shawnigan Lake with plenty of momentum. The impressive early-season results gives head coach, Craig Pond and the program confidence heading into the reminder of the fall schedule, proving that the T-Birds are once again the crew to beat in Western Canada.
