T-Birds dominate Warriors in Saturday sweep

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (13-10) put up 21 runs for the first time in 11 years in the second half of a doubleheader against Corban University (5-14), part of a Saturday sweep of the Warriors that saw the blue and gold outscore the hosts by a combined 31-1 in a statement day in Keizer, Oregon.

Trent Lenihan had a whopping seven RBI in the second game alone, part of a six hit, nine RBI day for the sophomore from White Rock.

As impressive a day it was at the plate for UBC, the T-Birds also saw some incredible pitching performances with both Sean Heppner and brother Ryan Heppner picking up wins.

GAME ONE

After dropping the series opener by a single run Friday night, the T-Birds came out with purposed Saturday, staking out a 5-0 lead after just two innings.

Scoring twice in the top of the first, the 'Birds burst the dam open the following inning when Mitchell Middlemiss hammered a two-run homer to left, his first of the season. Noah Or soon followed with a solo shot.

Brandon Hupe got in on the long ball action with a solo homer of his own in the top of the third, his first of the year, while Mike Fitzsimmons hit UBC's fourth home run of the game in the sixth to give the visitors a 9-0 lead.

Kellen Bourne hit an RBI single to give the 'Birds the 10-0 advantage through six, leading to the mercy rule invocation at the end of the seventh after the Warriors failed to score.

Sean Heppner picked up his second win of the season pitching all seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits, one walk, while striking out a season-high eight batters.

GAME TWO

UBC's red-hot bats kept swinging in the second game Saturday as the 'Birds scored 21 runs on 21 hits in a 21-1 win, the lone Corban run coming in the bottom of the seventh.

Fitzsimmons got things going with a two-RBI double in the top of the first. The T-Birds scored two more in the inning thanks to a pair of Corban fielding errors, and the rout was on from there.

Up 6-0 after two, Russell Young capped off a five-run third inning with a two-RBI single.

UBC scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 19-0. Lenihan earned his final RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to get the 'Birds to 20. A fielder's choice saw Aidan Rose score UBC's 21st run of the game, the first time the 'Birds hit that number since February 16, 2012 in a 21-7 win over Bethesda (Calif.)

Corban managed to spoil the shutout bid with a two-out RBI single by Brady Majewski.

Ryan Heppner grabbed his fourth win of the season going five innings strong allowing just one hit along with five strikeouts.

Now with four wins in their last five games, the 'Birds can grab their first series win of the season with a victory in Sunday's finale. First pitch at Volcanoes Stadium is set for 11:00 a.m. PT.
