VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds ((23-2-2) kicked off their final Canada West regular season weekend with a convincing 5-0 road victory Friday over the Regina Cougars.
Kennesha Miswaggon (1G, 2A) and
Joelle Fiala (3A) each contributed three points for the 'Birds while
Grace Elliott, the reigning Canada West Player of the Week, added a pair of goals.
Elise Hugens stopped all 17 shots she faced betweeen the pipes to secure her fifth shutout of the season and her second in as many starts.
QUICKLY
- The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss to UBC on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chanreet Bassi opened the scoring just under three minutes in with what turned out to be the game-winning goal, and goals by Grace Elliott and Kennesha Miswaggon gave UBC a 3-0 lead through the opening 20 minutes.
- UBC ended any hope of a Cougar comeback with two more goals in the second period. Elliott scored her second of the game and 12th of the season to extend the lead to 4-0, and Cassidy Rhodes capped the scoring with a power play goal later in the period.
NOTES
- Arden Kliewer made 33 saves as UBC held a 38-17 advantage in shots during the contest.
- Both teams ended up with five power play opportunities. UBC scored twice with the advantage.
- UBC (23-2-2) extends its winning streak to 11 games with the victory.
NEXT UP
- The Cougars will close out their 2022-23 season against UBC on Saturday afternoon. They'll honour graduating players Heather Fiske and Ireland Sorestad prior to game time, which is scheduled for 3:00 PM at The Co-operators Centre.
