Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | REG Communications with notes from UBC Communications

T-Birds hold off Cougars for 2-1 win

QUICKLY
The U SPORTS No. 4-ranked UBC Thunderbirds took a two goal lead in the second period and never looked back, holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, UBC's Cassidy Rhodes got the T-Birds on the board by looping through the Regina zone, walking into the slot, and scoring on a hard, point blank shot just a couple minutes into the second.
  • The Thunderbirds pushed the lead to two just past the midway mark of the second when Canada West goals leader Mackenzie Kordic slipped her 11th of the season in from the side of the net.
  • The Cougars broke through with just under five minutes to go in the third period. Megan Long took the puck into the UBC zone and slipped a pass over to Kaitlyn Gilroy, who fought off a Thunderbird checker and chipped it in to get Regina to within one.
  • Regina pulled their goalie Arden Kliewer in the final minute, but the Cougars weren't able to find the equalizer.

NOTES
  • UBC dominated the shot total for another game, outshooting Regina 42-16 on Friday.
  • The T-Birds continue to hold a one-point lead atop the Canada West standings.
  • Kliewer was brilliant for the Cougars, making a season-high 40 saves.
  • Neither team was able to connect with the power play. The Cougars ended up 0-for-6 with the advantage while UBC was 0-for-4.

QUOTE
  • "We need to play with more heart and consistency for 60 minutes," said UBC head coach Graham Thomas. "A frustrating game. We need to be better. On a positive note we found a way to win, our PK was good and Elise was solid in net."

NEXT UP
The T-Birds and Cougars will play again on Saturday at The Co-operators Centre in Regina. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. (PT).
