Defence-driven T-Birds wallop Wesmen in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG - Somehow, the UBC Thunderbirds' ridiculously stingy defence just keeps getting better. The T-Birds (4-0) smothered the Winnipeg Wesmen (1-3) in a resounding 77-42 victory at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday.

UBC held Winnipeg to just five points in the first quarter, after allowing only eight in Friday's opening frame. The 'Birds held a 42-20 lead at half-time, allowing them to give the bench plenty of run in the game's final 20 minutes for the second night in a row.

After having the best defence in Canada West last season, the T-Birds have yet to allow a team to score 60 points on them this year, while never scoring fewer than 68 themselves. That well-rounded play has resulted in four double digit wins to open the campaign.

Mona Berlitz had a big 17 points and 13 rebound double-double for the 'Birds to lead the game in both categories. Two Winnipeg-born T-Birds also had nice games in their homecoming as Emilia Banmann scored 13 points off the bench and Olivia Weekes chipped in 10 in just 18 minutes.

The undefeated T-Birds continue their road trip next weekend with their toughest test yet, a double dip against the Huskies in Saskatchewan. Watch all UBC women's basketball games live or on demand on Canada West TV.
