BOSTON - The Thunderbirds took to the waters of the historic Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts Sunday to battle both some of the top university programs in the world as well as challenging head wind conditions that put the team's skill and endurance to the test. UBC had four crews entered for the 58
thannual Head of the Charles, the largest three-day regatta in the world. The crews were comprised of athletes who will be going on to race at the upcoming Canadian University Rowing Championships, set to be hosted by the T-Birds at Burnaby Lake from November 10-12.
UBC's light men and women came to the event this year aiming to defend their '22 wins in the Lightweight 4+ event. Despite a solid race the lightweight men finished 3
rd just 3.7 seconds off of first place Cornell University and the light women finished 4
th with Stanford taking the top spot.
In the Championship 8+s, UBC's men finished 17
th among university crews and 20
thoverall, just behind Boston University and the University of Wisconsin. The US National Team won the event and Harvard was the top finishing university placing 2
nd overall. The Thunderbird women were the 23
rd university and 28
th overall just behind Oklahoma University. The US National Team also won the women's event.
