WINNIPEG — The UBC Thunderbirds completed a weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday afternoon, getting a 5-0 victory that included three power play goals. Over two games, UBC cashed in seven times with the advantage.
Five different players scored for UBC, including
Mackenzie Kordic, who has a Canada West-leading 12 points on the year.
Makenzie McCallum added a goal and an assist, and sits second in the conference, with eight points.
Elise Hugens stopped 20 shots for the shutout, while Meagan Relf stopped 22 shots in the loss.
A scoreless game was broken open in the second by UBC, who scored four times, including back-to-back power play markers that included a five-on-three.
Jacquelyn Fleming opened the scoring at 4:53 on a rebound off a shot from McCallum, and less than a minute later
Rylind MacKinnon made it 2-0 on another goal off a rebound.
Kordic added another on a loose puck with 6:04 to go, and McCallum rounded out a busy second period with a five-hole finish, also on the power play.
Manitoba showed tons of heart despite the score. Forward Kylie Lesuk blocked four shots through 40 minutes, while Relf made a number of impressive saves, including back-to-back pad stops from in close.
Jaylyn Morris rounded out the scoring for UBC in the third, going forehand-backhand for an impressive finish. Manitoba's best chance in the final 20 came on a wrist shot from forward Molly Kunnas from in close, but Hugens made a blocker stop, and Kunnas' follow up shot went off the post.
The T-Birds now return home for a six game home stand, starting with a pair of games against the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend. Puck drop in their next tilt is set for 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 20th at Father David Bauer Arena. Catch all UBC hockey games live or on demand on
