Burnaby Lake, BC - UBC Rowers swept both the 2023 Men's and Women's Western Canadian University Championship titles over the sunny Thanksgiving weekend out at Burnaby Lake. The T-Bird Men's team won a total of six of the nine races while the Women took five of nine races they competed in. UBC lightweight stand-out
Emerson Crick started the blue and gold off on the right foot narrowly surging to a 0.33 win over the University of Victoria Rowing Club's Giancarlo DiPompeo in the Light 1x.
UBC Men also won the Varsity 2-,2V 2-, Light 2x, Light 4+ and Varsity 8+. "It was a solid race day from our program, we had quite a number of new athletes in our top boats and they stepped up race by race successfully in finding the front on the field in most cases". The Men's 1x featured visiting Brock University stand-out Stephen Harris who won the Varsity 1x ahead of UBC's
Owen Bartel. Harris is partnering with
Emerson Crick in the Light Men's 2x at the upcoming Pan Am Games in Chile later this month.
The women's contest attracted southern neighbours NCAA's Washington State University Cougars. The Thunderbirds won five of nine races, taking the Varsity 8+, 2V 8+, 2V 2- and the Light 1x. UBC gained 164 points on the day to UVic 156.5. "We were excited to have WSU come up to the regatta this year, their attendance added depth to the women's side of the program. Our team performed very well this weekend, the depth in the program was highlighted by the strong performances by all three of our eights."
