VANCOUVER – For the first time since 2019, the UBC Thunderbirds are set to compete this week at the upcoming Henley Royal Regatta, one of the world's most prestigious rowing events.
Taking place between June 28 and July 3 in Henley-on-Thames, the Henley Royal Regatta attracts thousands of spectators from around the globe for one of the oldest rowing events anywhere, dating back to 1839.
The UBC Thunderbirds will enter the Temple Challenge Cup with their men's open weight 8+ crew. This event is specifically geared toward college and university programs with past participants including Oxford, Yale, and Washington. The 'Birds' men's 8+ has remained undefeated in Canada for five consecutive years and will be looking to maintain this standing as they race for gold against some of the best collegiate crews from around the globe.
The UBC men's first race will see them face a strong the University of California Berkley team on Tuesday, June 28th at 11:20 a.m. PT (7:20 a.m. UK).

UBC will also enter an open weight women's 8+ crew and a lightweight women's 2x to compete in the Island Challenge Cup and the Stonor Challenge Trophy, respectively. Like the Temple Challenge Cup, the Island Challenge Cup features standout collegiate crews across the world. The UBC women have had significant success within Canada, winning the overall national championship banner for the third consecutive year including the open women's 8+ event.
The UBC women's first race will see them take on Princeton University on Wednesday, June 29th with the full schedule and start times still to be determined.
