Game Recap: Baseball | | Bushnell Beacons Athletics

T-Birds and Beacons split series

VANCOUVER – For the second consecutive day, the UBC Thunderbirds split a doubleheader with the Bushnell Beacons in Oregon. The hosts earned a second straight walk-off win, this time in the bottom of the 12th with a 4-3 victory, while the T-Birds bounced back to secure the series split with a 5-2 win in the weekend finale.

Bushnell moves to 11-33 overall and 9-11 in CCC action with just Lewis-Clark State left in conference play. British Columbia is now 20-21 overall and 7-8 in conference action with Corban and Oregon Tech coming up.

Game One: Bushnell 4, British Columbia 3 (12 innings)

The Beacons and Thunderbirds played through the on-and-off rain and hail in game one, finishing the contest after four and a half hours of play. It was the third consecutive game in the series that came down to the final inning.

The sides were tied at 1-1 entering the ninth before Ty Penner hit a two-run double for the Thunderbirds to put them on top 3-1.

The bottom of the ninth was interrupted by the second rain delay but the Beacons came out of the pause with a pair of runs of their own to send the game to extras. Jacob Stoner singled down the left field line to move Dylan Carson, who had reached on a walk prior to the delay, into scoring position. The pair advanced on a wild pitch and Carson crossed home on a double play. Stoner scored on a two-out wild pitch to keep Bushnell's hopes alive.

Daniel Furman came in to pitch three scoreless innings of relief for the Beacons and did not allow a hit, facing just nine batters as the Thunderbird who walked was caught stealing. Bushnell opened the bottom of the 12th with three straight walks to load the bases. Carson made contact in the following at-bat, sending a well-placed grounder to second base to bring home Dylan Martin for the walk off.

Stoner finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead a Bushnell offense that finished with eight hits. The Beacons drew nine walks on the game. Kai Keamo was the starter for the Beacons, allowing just one run on two hits in five innings of work.

Game Two: British Columbia 5, Bushnell 2

The Thunderbirds never trailed in the series finale, grabbing a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Carson drove in the first run for the Beacons with a single in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Reed brought home Peyton Hino with a single in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 3-2 deficit but UBC starting pitcher Brett Corbeth answered with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to seal the 5-2 finale.

Corbeth contributed heavily for the Thunderbirds, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He pitched seven innings as the Thunderbird starter, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Vicarte Domingo recorded his fifth save of the season after not allowing a hit in final frame.

The T-Birds have two conference series remaining as they hit the stretch run of the regular season and a CCC playoff berth hanging in the balance. UBC heads back on the road next weekend for a four game tilt against the Corban Warriors followed by their final home series of the season against Oregon Tech April 30 and May 1 at Tourmaline West Stadium.
