The UBC Thunderbirds earned an 11-4 victory against the Corban Warriors at Volcano's Stadium Friday night to open up the four-game weekend series. The visitors tallied 13 hits and capitalized on a trio of Warrior miscues as the Navy and Gold offense was shut down by the strong UBC pitching staff.
The T-Birds attacked early as
Nathan Shute started off his impressive night with an RBI triple to score the first run of the game.
Brandon Hupe then added another RBI to bring the visitors lead to 2-0.
Two more UBC runs were scored in the second inning as some wild pitching and errors doubled the T-Birds lead to 4-0.
The Warriors cut into the lead in the bottom half of the second inning as a couple of RBI singles trimmed the deficit in half before a sac fly brought the game within one run at 4-3.
Brett Corbeth launched a solo home run to kick off an explosive fourth inning for the T-Birds.Â
Jonny McGill followed with a double to recover the 'Birds four run lead before Shute continued to flash his bat with a single to score two more, 8-3.
Corban added one run in the sixth inning with a bases loaded walk as the visitors attempted to rally a comeback, 8-4.
A couple more insurance runs were added by the T-Birds late as
Nolan Weger's RBI single in the seventh inning extended the large margin, and Shute's 2 RBI double in the final inning all but sealed the game.
Shane LaForest improves to 5-3 on the season, as his three strikeouts in five innings of work earned him the victory. Shute had his way against Corban pitchers Friday night as he drove in 5 RBI.
