T-Birds split series with Mount Royal

VANCOUVER – A day after the UBC Thunderbirds earned a well-fought shutout win over the Mount Royal Cougars, the tables were turned as the hosts handed the blue and gold a 1-0 defeat, splitting the weekend series at Calgary's Flames Community Arenas.

The only goal Saturday afternoon came late in the second period when Aliya Jomha jammed the puck across the goal line for her second of the season.

In what was a penalty-filled affair, neither team had any success on the power play with the T-Birds finishing the game 0-for-8 while the Cougars failed to score on seven chances.

After stopping all 22 shots Friday night, UBC goaltender Elise Hugens made 29 saves Saturday. Her counterpart at the other end of the ice, Kaitlyn Ross, stopped all 30 pucks sent her way as she picked up her second shutout of the season.

The loss snaps UBC's four-game win streak and remarkable 13-game point streak dating back to early October.

Splitting the weekend keeps the Cougars one point back of the T-Birds for first place in the conference as UBC suffered just their second regulation loss of the season.

The 'Birds are back home next Friday and Saturday hosting the Regina Cougars for the final series of 2022 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Tickets are on sale now.
