'Birds Come Home With A Split From Calgary

CALGARY – Sophia Zuck scored her first two Canada West goals on Saturday afternoon as the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Prince Albert, Sask. native tallied twice in the second period as the Dinos split the weekend set. Both Calgary and UBC are 1-1 on the new season.

After a conservative start to the game with no goals scored in the first period, it took just 38 seconds for Calgary to find the back of the net in the middle frame. Zuck scored her first as a Dino by getting her body in front of the net and finished a pass through the middle of the ice from Elizabeth Lang.

The Dinos dominated the play in the second and Zuck netted her second of the day by, again, getting herself to the top of the crease where she was set up by Sydney Mercier. The scoring play earned Mercier her second assist of the contest.

The home team's defence stepped up in the final period to preserve the lead, blocking shots with their bodies and goaltender Gabriella Durante remained sharp, shutting down all attempts by the Thunderbirds.

Calgary solidified their win with a two-on-one play ending with Rebecca Clarke depositing the puck into an empty net.

Durante notched 28 saves in the win to get her first shutout of the season, while UBC goalie Kate Stuart had 27 stops in her UBC debut.

The Dinos are back in action Oct. 7-8 against the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon. UBC will take on the Manitoba Bisons in their home opener next weekend.
