VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds were held scoreless for the second consecutive game despite a flurry of chances throughout as the Regina Cougars skated away with the 3-0 win Saturday afternoon at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
The loss extends the T-Birds' (7-9-1-3) losing streak to eight games while the Cougars (6-10-4-0) have now won four in a row, now tied with UBC for fifth place in the Canada West standings.
Following a scoreless first period, both sides came out aggressively to start the second as both Regina and the Thunderbirds hunted for the first goal of the game.
The Cougars opened scoring at the 9:55 mark of the middle frame off a nice zone entry by Jordan Kulbida, fresh off scoring the winning goal the night before. Kulbida fed Chelsea Hallson whose backhander took a wicked deflection to get past
Tory Micklash and into the UBC net, Hallson's first of the season.
The home team piled on the pressure late in the period but were not able to register a clear-cut chance as Regina held them to the outside.
With UBC desperately needing a goal in the third, they were gifted a power play but were once again unable to convert despite numerous chances.
With two minutes remaining, Micklash was pulled for the extra attacker. With the T-Birds pressing, Regina was able to score two empty net goals to finish off the 3-0 win.
Jane Kish registered her second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season, stopping 18 shots while Micklash denied 17 of 18 in the loss.
"Huge for us, essentially a 12 point weekend," said Regina head coach Sarah Hodges. "We needed to come in and play well in what is always a tough place to play, and we did so."
The Thunderbirds are back on the road next weekend visiting the Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars return home for the first time in 2020 as they'll play host to the Mount Royal Cougars with key playoff positioning on the line.
