Keylyn Filewich scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 77-44 win over UBC Okanagan Heat in Canada West women's basketball action Friday night in Kelowna, B.C.

It is Filewich's third-straight game reaching double digits in points and rebounds, as UBC improved to 4-3 in league play.

Starting in front of friends and family in her hometown, guard
Kate Johnson poured in 15 points and added five rebounds and five steals for the Thunderbirds, while guard
Jessica Hanson had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.

UBC held an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, which saw the home side go up 7-3 before
Tanis Metcalfe's layup with just over two minutes remaining put the 'Birds up 17-10.

UBC took control of the contest in the second period, outscoring the Heat 23-9, with Filewich recording 12 points. With the 'Birds up 24-18, she scored her team's next 10 points to give them a 34-20 edge.

The third quarter was similar as UBC doubled up the Heat 22-11. Rookie centre
Olivia Morgan-Cherchas had five points and three rebounds in the period. A pair of
Dina Strujic foul shots rounded out the scoring in the third with the 'Birds up 63-34.

UBC made 31 of 74 shots from the field for a 41.9 per cent success rate, while holding Okanagan to just 28.3 per cent (17-60) in the same category. The T-Birds dominated down low, outscoring the home side 52-24 in the paint, and outrebounded them 51-41. UBC also forced 22 turnovers.

The two sides will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.
