VANCOUVER — The UBC Thunderbirds saw their six game win streak come to a halt with a 2-1 overtime decision to the Mount Royal University Cougars Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Nicolette Seper's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time for the Cougars (6-6-1-0) as the fourth year forward beat
Tory Micklash 1:33 into 4-on-4 action. The loss ends UBC's win streak but their point streak continues, now at 11 consecutive games while they are now tied atop the Canada West standings with the Calgary Dinos.
The Thunderbirds (7-2-1-3) controlled most if not all of the first period, getting numerous scoring chances throughout the frame. But the game remained goalless after 20 minutes with the home side leading in the shot category 12-4, unable to cash in on their lone power play.
UBC would open scoring early in the second period though, as on their second power play of the game a
Shay-Lee McConnell point shot was deflected en route to the net by
Ashley McFadden to give the 'Birds the 1-0 advantage at the 2:24 mark.
Another man advantage for the home team later in the frame almost led to the visitors tying it up, as MRU leading scorer Anna Purschke fed Tianna Ko on a 2-on-1 shorthanded, but her shot deflected off Micklash and wide.
Early in the third, however, all the Cougars pressure paid off. On MRU's first power play of the game, Purshcke was able to deflect a shot from the point into the net to tie things up. Despite some late chances for both teams to end the period, the game went to overtime.
1:33 into the extra frame, Seper, who assisted on the tying goal, received a great pass from Purschke, creating some room for herself inside the UBC zone. Seper let a shot go that got by Micklash to win it in heart breaking style for the Cougars.
"I thought we didn't stick to the game plan tonight, we overcomplicated the play at times, we didn't match their effort," said UBC head coach
Graham Thomas following the game. "It would have been nice to get a second goal tonight, it would have changed the game but unfortunately we weren't able to connect."
UBC get their chance at a rematch Sunday with a 3:00 p.m. PT puck drop at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
