UBC records history-making national championship sweep

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds rowing program made history Sunday by sweeping both the men's and women's team titles at the Canadian University Rowing Championships, hosted this weekend by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont., for the first time.

UBC won the men's competition for the third straight time and the fourth in five years. It is the school's fifth title overall (2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2005). The T-Birds finished with 100 points, 14 more than Western, and 18 more than Victoria. Mike Pearce was named the Canadian University Rowing Association's Men's Coach of the Year.

Improving on their third-place finish in 2017, the Thunderbirds won the CURC women's banner today at Henley Island to add to the national title they won in 2004. UBC scored 121 points in the women's team standings, ahead of Victoria (105) and Western (66). Craig Pond was named co-Coach of the Year.
