UBC women's hockey completes road sweep with shootout win

REGINA – Emma Hall scored the shootout winner for the UBC Thunderbirds as the visitors took a 2-1 win over the Regina Cougars women's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday afternoon.

After the first four shooters in the shootout missed, Hall's name was called for UBC. The rookie forward went in on Jane Kish and made an incredible move, slipping the puck in the net after a smooth deke. Jordan Kulbida had a chance to tie, but ripped a high shot that rang off the crossbar.

Kenzie Robinson scored in regulation for UBC, as the T-Birds improve to 6-2-3-3 with the overtime win. Jaycee Magwood got the lone goal for Regina, as the Cougars earn a point and go to 5-6-1-2.

Tory Micklash earned her second win of the weekend in net, making 27 saves for UBC. Kish stopped 30 shots at the opposing end of the ice.

For the second-straight game the first period wrapped up without any scoring, with the best chance for the Cougars coming just over two minutes in as Emma Waldenberger beat Micklash with a high shot that rang off the crossbar.

The first goal of the afternoon came courtesy of the UBC power play once again. Logan Boyd teed up Mathea Fischer for a slapshot from the wing, which was deflected under the crossbar by Robinson for her second goal of the weekend.

It looked like UBC had doubled the lead midway through the third period at the tail end of a Thunderbird power play, after Kish made a big save on Celine Tardif from the slot. A wild scramble in the crease followed and the goal light came on, but the referee was right behind the net and frantically waved off a UBC goal as Kish had miraculously kept the puck out.

The Cougars evened it up on a power play with 7:42 left in regulation on a strange goal. Waldenberger pulled the puck out from behind the net and tried to jam it in on a wraparound, but was stacked up by Micklash. A number of players converged on the net, pushing Micklash into the net until the referee signalled goal and Magwood was credited with her fourth of the year.

Both teams had great chances to end it in the first overtime, with Magwood rifling a shot that Micklash knocked aside with her blocker, and Kish making a nice kick save at the other end of the rink.

Brie Bellerive hit the post in the 3-on-3 overtime, and had a breakaway opportunity seconds later but shot high and wide. A stumbling Cougar let UBC in on a 2-on-0 chance shortly after, but Kish made a remarkable save, diving to her right to get a piece of the one-timer.

The Cougars will close the 2018 calendar year with a road series next weekend against Mt. Royal. UBC will be on the road again with a matchup against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
