CALGARY – First-year forward
Emma Hall finished with a pair of points while
Tory Micklash made 16 saves for her first shutout of the season as the UBC Thunderbirds completed the weekend sweep of the Mount Royal Cougars with a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon at the Flames Community Arena.
The first period opened quickly as both teams were efforting to put more pucks on net than Friday night, but none were going in. That is, until a shot from Thunderbirds forward
Jenna Fletcher flew past Zoe De Beauville, to open scoring with the second-year forward's first goal of the season. Hall and
Rylind MacKinnon picked up the helpers.
The second period was one the Cougars would like to put behind them. Just 1:38 into the frame, MRU found themselves down 2-0 after Hall scored her first as a Thunderbird. Moments later, Mount Royal's Morgan Ramsey was given a penalty and on the ensuing power-play, UBC scored another goal, courtesy of
Ashley McFadden, her first in the blue and gold.
Down 3-0, the Cougars had a few quality scoring chances but couldn't convert and were held off the scoresheet while Micklash picked up her sixth career shutout.
UBC finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play. After going on the penalty kill a combined 16 times through their first three games, the 'Birds didn't take a single penalty Saturday afternoon.
Improving to 2-1-1 on the season, the T-Birds are back home next weekend hosting the Calgary Dinos Friday and Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
