VANCOUVER – The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds swept the host Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) Friday in Canada West women's volleyball action in the Manitoba capital.
Left side Kiera Van Ryk had a match-high 10 kills and the Thunderbirds ran their win streak to seven matches and improved to 13-2 on the season. Winnipeg fell to 1-14.
Gabrielle Attieh, Olivia Furlan, Ciara Hanly and Anna Price all chipped in with six kills for UBC. Alessandra Gentile had 29 assists, and 12 digs, both game highs. The fifth-year setter needs one more assist to tie Carla Bradstock's school record of 2,756 in a career during Canada West regular season play. Gentile also had three aces on the night, moving her career total to 104, two behind UBC record holder Shanice Marcelle.
Ashleigh Laube had eight kills to lead the Wesmen, who also got seven kills on 14 swings from middle blocker Jessica Friesen. Laube tied with left side Emma Parker with a team-high 10 digs.
The Wesmen had the T-Birds at 9-9 in the first set, but watched as UBC won six of the next seven points.
An attack error gave the T-Birds an early 10-4 lead in the second set. Winnipeg kept the visitors close, shrinking the gap to just two points, and trailed just 19-17. However, UBC ended the set on a 6-2 surge to finish things off. Victoria Behie knocked down a kill to make it 24-18. On the team's second set point, Behie provided the block to give the blue and gold a two-set lead.
UBC led 16-9 at the technical timeout, a sequence that included a run of four straight points on Alessandra Gentile's serve, which was sparked by an ace to make it 9-6. Kills from Olivia Furlan (2), and Van Ryk pushed the T-Birds to a 12-6 lead. Winnipeg responded with four consecutive points coming out of the timeout, but lost momentum by surrendering the next five. With the score 21-13 in its favour, UBC was able to close out the set and match.
Winnipeg hit .046 for the contact, while UBC was .155.
The two teams meet again Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.
