VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team (18-3-3-1) have built a reputation this season as a team that can make things happen in the clutch. On Friday, they took that to a whole new level. Down 3-2 with under a minute remaining,
Logan Boyd and
Cassandra Vilgrain scored just 32 seconds apart, propelling the 'Birds to a 4-3 win over the Regina Cougars (10-11-3-1).
Â
Vilgrain's stunner capped off a spectacular night for the Calgarian, as she finished with two goals and an assist, while
Stephanie Schaupmeyer and Boyd added singles for UBC. Emma Waldenberger, Merissa Zerr and Sam Geekie replied for the Cougars.
Â
After Bailey Braden was whistled for a double minor for a hit to the head at the 17:30 mark of the third period, Geekie broke what was a 2-2 tie with a breakaway goal on a quick wrist shot past
Amelia Boughn. ??With just over 90 seconds on the clock, the Thunderbirds pulled Boughn for a six-on-four advantage. Boyd was the beneficiary, taking a feed from
Mathea Fischer from behind the net and beating Jane Kish to even the score.
Â
With Braden still in the box, Vilgrain directed a pass to the front of the goal for a streaking UBC attacker. The puck deflected off the skate of a Cougar defender and slipped past Kish with just 10 seconds on the game clock, completing the unlikely comeback for UBC.
Â
The 'Birds were outplayed by the Cougars early, as Waldenberger and Zerr both potted rebounds on powerplay opportunities to give the home team a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. UBC got one back in the second, thanks to Schaupmeyer's powerplay marker at the 4:35 mark. The first of Vilgrain's goals came late in the third on another tough break for Kish, as the high shot deflected off a body and skipped through the Cougar netminder's legs.
Â
Boughn made 22 saves for her 13th win, while her counterpart Kish turned away 14 shots in the loss.
Â
The Cougars and Thunderbirds will face off again on Saturday night, with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT) at The Co-operators Centre. With a single point on, the 'Birds would lock up first overall in the Canada West standings and a first round bye in the conference playoffs.
