Clayton-Carroll leads 'Birds to weekend sweep

Hannah Clayton-Carroll scored twice including her second game winner in as many days as the UBC Thunderbirds (8-4-0-0) downed the Mount Royal Cougars (3-9-0-0) 3-1 to complete the weekend sweep Saturday afternoon at Flames Community Arenas.

For the second straight game the 'Birds rode special teams to the victory, finishing the weekend having killed off all eight combined Cougar power plays including three five-on-threes.

"I saw a more coordinated team effort today," said UBC head coach Graham Thomas. "We really preached the way we need to manage the game, play Thunderbird hockey, and that I think was the biggest positive coming out of today."

MRU started the game on a better note than the contest previous, forcing bodies to the net and forcing a UBC defence to stand at attention in the opening shifts of the game. However, the Thunderbirds coped with the pressure and found the back of the net  just 6:03 in. Cassandra Vilgrain scuffed the puck on a two-on-one when she shot the puck at Zoe De Beauville rather than the yawning cage. The rebound landed on the tape of Mathea Fischer who slapped the puck into the back of the net for her first goal on the season.

UBC then pressed the Cougars and found the back of the net for the second time in the first period.
The goal would've put a smile on any coach's face as a set play written on the whiteboard translated to the ice. Centre Logan Boyd won the puck back to Madison Patrick who with some nifty head bobbing, managed to find open ice. She slap-passed the puck to an open Clayton-Carroll on the short side who tipped the puck upstairs to double UBC's lead at the 13:33 mark.

In the second frame, UBC started playing loosely along with some added aggression, taking a cross-checking and two body checking penalties in the period but killed all of them off. The Cougars found themselves on yet another two man-advantage inside the first five minutes, their third of the series. But again, the Cougars failed to make good on the opportunity to claw back into the game.

With less than two minutes to go in the second, the Thunderbirds tallied their third goal of the game putting on a clinic on a bruised up MRU defence. Clayton-Carroll continued to scorch the Cougars jamming in her second goal of the game and seventh of the year putting her tied for the conference lead in goals while the T-Birds took a 3-0 lead.

"She's really accepted the challenge," said Thomas who's happy to see Clayton-Carroll's hard work pay off. "She dug in this summer, she put the work in and came ready and it's really shown. I'm so proud of her and what she's accomplishing and how she's playing with confidence right now."

MRU managed to sneak one past UBC goalie Tory Micklash, breaking her shutout bid with just over four minutes remaining when Reanna Arnold tossed a low driven shot on net that went in past a crowd of bodies.

The T-Birds managed to keep the puck in the Cougars' end for the rest of the game and held on for the weekend sweep.

The win moves UBC to within two points of the conference leading Manitoba Bisons as the 'Birds' 24 points has them tied with Alberta for second. Appropriately, the two Canada West rivals will meet in a rematch of last year's conference final next Friday and Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
