Vancouver, BC –
Kathleen Cahoon's first of the season was all the UBC Thunderbirds (6-2-0-0) needed in yet another tightly fought defensive battle for a 1-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-5-2-0) in head coach
Graham Thomas' 100
th career Canada West regular season victory.
"It's a great milestone but it's 100 percent a team achievement," said Thomas shortly after his historic win. "I'm just so blessed, I want to thank our staff, everybody involved. But it's a players' achievement. They bought in, they're the ones that put the work in. It really is a great team achievement that way. I'm so blessed with the players we have here now and our alumni, everyone shares in it."
"Since he's been here he's turned the program around completely and he's taught us so much," said Cahoon who is in her fifth year under Thomas' tutelage. "The culture we have is drawn from him and he's developed everyone throughout the years. A lot of our success is his success."
Amelia Boughn wasn't busy early Saturday afternoon but held down the fort when the 'Horns made a late push and finished with 24 saves for her second shutout of the season.
"We have to be smarter and be more disciplined," said
Graham Thomas who saw his team give up seven power plays to the 'Horns. "But we did a really good job, our penalty kill was perfect this weekend and Amelia was fantastic. She was a wall back there for us."
For the second straight game the 'Birds opened scoring, this time at the 9:07 mark when Cahoon pounced on a loose puck low in the slot for her first of the season from
Logan Boyd and
Ireland Perrott.
"It's definitely good to get that monkey off my back after dealing with some injuries but I'm happy to be back and playing with some really good linemates," said Cahoon.
The T-Birds would not be able to get anything further past Alicia Anderson who was terrific once again in net for the Pronghorns finishing with 30 saves while earning the game's third star.
UBC got into penalty trouble in the second period and again late in the third but the 'Birds penalty kill was solid going a perfect 7-for-7. The Thunderbirds weren't able to score on their own man advantage finishing the game 0-for-6.
The win makes it six in their last seven and ensures the 'Birds will stay atop the Canada West standings through next weekend's bye before hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies November 10 and 11 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
